Study Sessions is an ongoing event series inspired by Fred Moten and Stefano Harney’s notion of study as “what you do with other people.” For each Study Session, an artist, writer, or cultural worker selects a work of art on view in the Whitney’s permanent collection galleries as a departure point for thinking through an urgent question in our contemporary political landscape. Participants are invited to join together in open-ended discussions, and engage with creative practice. Study Sessions may take the form of workshops, listening parties, performances, readings, or film screenings. This session is led by Morgan Bassichis. Inspired by John Giorno’s The World is Getting Empty, on view in An Incomplete History of Protest: Selections from the Whitney’s Collection, 1940–2017, Bassichis will engage participants in an exploration of collective emotion, language, and music. In Bassichis' own words, "I'm really aiming for this to be useful."

Morgan Bassichis is a comedic performer whose shows have been described as "out there" (by Morgan's mother) and "super intense" (by Morgan). Morgan has performed at Artists Space, Danspace Project, MoMA PS1, Poetry Project, and Portland Institute of Contemporary Art. Morgan's musical adaptation of Larry Mitchell and Ned Asta's 1977 manifesto-fairytale "The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions" was featured in the New Museum's recent exhibition, Trigger: Gender as a Tool and a Weapon. Morgan's essays on queer politics have been published in the Radical History Review, Captive Genders, and other anthologies.
