Queer History Walks

Select Fridays, 6 pm

Floor 1

Join us for a free walking tour that explores the rich queer history of the neighborhood surrounding the Whitney Museum. This sunset walk will bring visitors to select historical sites that once provided a place to find and create queer community. From the Hudson River piers to the clubs, visitors are invited to consider their connection to the changing landscape of the neighborhood that the Whitney now occupies, as well as to the history of the city.

Josh Lubin-Levy is a Joan Tisch Teaching Fellow at the Whitney Museum and PhD Candidate in Performance Studies at New York University. His dissertation, Uncollectible: Jack Smith and Performing the ‘Hatred of Capitalism, explores the intersection of collection and dematerialization in the postwar period. For the past ten years he has worked as a dance dramaturgy and performance curator and he recently joined the faculty at Bard College as a Visiting Assistant Professor in Theater and Performance.

Ayanna Dozier is a Ph.D. Candidate in Art History & Communication Studies with a graduate option in Women & Gender Studies at McGill University. Her dissertation, entitled The Aberrations of Affect: Archives, Ritual, and the Counter-Poetics of Black Women’s Experimental Short Films (1970s-Present), explores the intersection of the formal and narrative aesthetics in Black women’s experimental short films with the filmmaker’s sociocultural experience. Dozier's writing on Black feminist philosophy, experimental cinema, comic books, and performance and contemporary art can be found in Cléo Journal, Feminist Media Studies, and Liquid Blackness Journal.
