The Future Whitney: Preparing the Collection

Tues, Jan 28, 2014
7 pm

All members.

When it opens in 2015, the Whitney’s new building will feature two gallery floors (totaling 25,000 square feet) dedicated to the display of the permanent collection. Providing more space than ever to showcase the Museum’s iconic holdings of modern and contemporary American Art, these galleries will be an unparalleled resource for understanding the art of the United States since 1900 and will offer museumgoers the powerful experience of viewing the Whitney’s rotating exhibitions within the context of the permanent collection.

To prepare for this historic opportunity, the Whitney’s curators have undertaken an extensive analysis and reexamination of the permanent collection in collaboration with departments across the Museum. This important research will deepen an understanding of the Whitney’s history, uncover illuminating details from the archives, and lay the groundwork for future scholarship.
