Teens are welcome to join Open Studio for Teens, a free artmaking program on select Fridays. Together with contemporary artists and educators, teens can delve into innovative techniques through hands-on projects that draw inspiration from the themes and artists featured in the Whitney’s collection and exhibitions.

Open Studios will feature tours by current Youth Insights Leaders, participants in the Whitney’s internship program for high school juniors and seniors.

All programs are free for those 18 and under; registration is required.

October 2: Agosto Machado
Teens are invited to an Open Studio celebrating the life and legacy of Agosto Machado. Explore Machado’s altar and shrine work while reflecting on themes of memory, community, and remembrance. Youth Insights Leaders will lead conversations about Machado’s work, followed by a hands-on artmaking activity inspired by his practice.

December 4: Coumba Samba
Teens are invited to join artist Coumba Samba for a hands-on studio exploring sculpture, color, and creative image-making. Inspired by Samba’s Stars and Stripes, participants will consider how national symbols, natural resources, and global systems of power are connected. Using sculptural forms and visual compositions, teens will transform familiar symbols to uncover hidden stories, relationships, and histories.
