The New York Times Feminist Reading Group

Floor Three, Laurie M. Tisch Education Center, Hearst Artspace

On the occasion of the historic 2016 U.S. presidential election, artists Jen Kennedy and Liz Linden perform their ongoing project The New York Times Feminist Reading Group, which is dedicated to reading the day's issue of The New York Times from a feminist perspective.

The New York Times Feminist Reading Group combines different models of feminist gatherings, including consciousness-raising groups of the 1960s and 70s activism, academic seminar formats, and socially-oriented book-clubs most often convened in the hosts’ domestic spaces. Because current events are a fluid and changing subject matter, each performance differs dramatically, shaped as well by the range of backgrounds and political positions of the participants in the room. The New York Times Feminist Reading Group is a way to examine the media landscape through the lens of feminism but also look at the diversity of feminisms represented in media, and in this way each performance tells us something about the wide variety of what feels urgent and relevant to each participant that day.

Free with Museum admission.
