First introduced in 1932 by the Museum’s founder, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, the Biennial is the longest-running survey of American art and has been a hallmark of the Museum since its establishment. More than 3,600 artists have participated in a biennial or annual and 2022 will mark the eightieth edition of the exhibition.
