Learning Series Course: American Art at the Turn of the Twenty-first Century

Learning Series Members in the Curate Your Own Program

Initiated at a transformative moment in the Whitney’s history, this two-part course for Learning Series members is the first in a continuing program that will bridge the final exhibition season in the Whitney’s Madison Avenue building and the opening of its new building in the spring of 2015. The class combines lecture, gallery talks, and discussion to explore the art of the last three decades, taking the work of Jeff Koons as a touch point. Additional classes planned for fall 2014 through spring 2015 will consider American art of the twentieth century in a reverse chronological survey, reaching back to the decades surrounding the Whitney’s founding in 1931.

This class is taught by Joan Tisch Teaching Fellow Paula Burleigh. A PhD candidate in art history at the CUNY Graduate Center and the recipient of the Graduate Center's Cappelloni Dissertation Fellowship, Paula is currently writing her dissertation about the use of archaic forms in a range of utopian projects in Western Europe in the 1950s and 1960s. She has taught courses at Baruch College, Bard High School Early College, and at the Museum of Modern Art. She is a frequent contributor to the Arts section of the Brooklyn Rail.
