Calder: Hypermobility features an expansive series of performances and events, bringing contemporary artists into dialogue with Alexander Calder as they interplay their own disparate practices with his innovations. This weekend of performances features the renowned new music ensemble JACK Quartet engaging in a direct relationship with Calder’s works. Calder was a close friend of many 20th century avant-garde musicians and his kinetic sculptures deeply influenced their work. Today, Calder's work continues to inspire experimentation in contemporary composition. These programs present groundbreaking works by John Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, and Amy Williams both in the Susan and John Hess Family Theater and in the Eighth Floor Gallery itself, amidst Calder’s sculptures.
PERFORMANCES IN CALDER: HYPERMOBILITY
August 5, 4:30, 5:30, and 6:30 pm
JACK Quartet will perform a score by John Cage titled Thirty Pieces for String Quartet, hourly in the gallery. Audience is invited to walk through the exhibition or experience the performance from the Studio Cafe, taking advantage of the porous relationship with gallery.
Free with museum admission. The Studio Cafe will remain open on a first-come, first-seated basis for those interested in experiencing the performance with the cafe’s sightlines and refreshments.
PERFORMANCE IN CALDER: HYPERMOBILITY AND CONCERT IN SUSAN AND JOHN HESS FAMILY THEATER

JACK Quartet will perform four compositions, beginning with Cage's Thirty Pieces for String Quartet in the gallery, then transitioning to the Theater for Structures by Morton Feldman, String Quartet by Earle Brown, and Richter Textures by Amy Williams.
Doors open a half an hour in advance of performance start time. Tickets are required ($25 adults; $18 members, students and seniors). Capacity is limited. Visitors are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance. Online ticket sales close two hours before the performance begins. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the admissions desk on a first-come, first-served basis.
JACK Quartet operates as a nonprofit organization dedicated to the performance, commissioning, and spread of new string quartet music. Comprised of violinists Christopher Otto and Austin Wulliman, violist John Pickford Richards, and cellist Jay Campbell, JACK has collaborated with notable composers such as John Luther Adams, Chaya Czernowin, Simon Steen-Andersen, Caroline Shaw, Helmut Lachenmann, Steve Reich, Matthias Pintscher, and John Zorn. Upcoming and recent premieres include works by Derek Bermel, Cenk Ergün, Roger Reynolds, Toby Twining, and Georg Friedrich Haas. JACK quartet has been the recipient of many prestigious awards such as Lincoln Center's Martin E. Segal Award, New Music USA's Trailblazer Award, and the CMA/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming. JACK has performed to critical acclaim at Carnegie Hall (USA), Lincoln Center (USA), Miller Theatre (USA), Wigmore Hall (United Kingdom), Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ (Netherlands), IRCAM (France), Kölner Philharmonie (Germany), the Lucerne Festival (Switzerland), La Biennale di Venezia (Italy), Suntory Hall (Japan), Bali Arts Festival (Indonesia), Festival Internacional Cervatino (Mexico), and Teatro Colón (Argentina).
