How does the past touch us, and how do we touch back? In this virtual program, members are invited to join Joan Tisch Teaching Fellow Caitlin Chan in exploring themes of relationality found in Whitney Biennial 2026. Examine a selection of artists and collectives, featured in this eighty-second installment of the survey, who present works of art as records of interconnection.

Discover a broad range of material strategies that artists employ to process familial legacies, environmental catastrophe, and global networks of movement. By considering the form of the imprint—what touch leaves behind—Chan will draw connections between artworks’ materiality and their emotional resonance. From casts of family heirlooms evoking allegories of parental molding, to the negative space of lace patterns revealing absence as essential to relation, this talk will invite members to consider the physical, psychological, and metaphorical imprints artists make and inherit.

Caitlin Chan is an art history Ph.D. candidate at Stanford University, and a Joan Tisch Teaching Fellow at the Whitney Museum. She has presented her work at Columbia University, the College Art Association, the Association for Art History, and Leuphana University. At Stanford, Caitlin is a recipient of the Jeanette and William Hayden Jones Fellowship in American Art and Culture. Previously, Caitlin has worked at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Gallery 102, and Christie’s Auction House.
