Traditionally, drawing served a more private function within an artist’s education or working process. However, for many contemporary artists, drawing is an important medium and a major component for their work. Following this shift in artists’ practices, the Whitney’s collection has evolved to encompass a wider range drawings, both historical and contemporary, that reflect varied approaches to medium. This special talk and presentation with curatorial assistant Nicholas Robbins will closely consider recent drawing acquisitions and illuminate some of the important roles that drawings play in the Museum’s collection, exhibitions, and scholarship.
