Insider Focus: The Making of America Is Hard to See

Learn about the process of organizing and installing the Whitney’s inaugural exhibition, America Is Hard to See, the most extensive display of the Whitney’s collection to date. Over the past five years, curators looked at works that had not been displayed in decades, hosted conversations with artists and scholars to foster new ideas, and organized a series of exhibitions uptown to reconsider iconic figures and works within new contexts. In the final months before the new building opening, the curators worked with architects to plan the placement of temporary walls, finalized the exhibition checklist, and fine-tuned installation details, from the layout of each room to the color of the walls. In this presentation, curatorial assistant Mia Curran will survey the process of creating the exhibition, offering an opportunity to learn about the various facets of curatorial work.
