Inside Whitney Biennial 2017

The Whitney Biennial is the Museum’s signature exhibition, with a history of presenting emerging and established artists who explore the fundamental questions of their time. The 2017 Biennial is the first to take place in the Whitney’s new building and it occurs at a moment of national and international turbulence.

This four-week course will give participants an in-depth view of the works in the exhibition and will probe the urgent questions—about individual identity, community, and the formation of self in American culture and society—that artists are grappling with today. We will consider artists working in a range of media, including painting, sculpture, drawing, installation, film and video, activism, performance and video game design.

Course participants will have the opportunity to meet with a Biennial artist and one of the Biennial curators. Participants in the evening sessions will have access to the Biennial galleries after museum hours.

Instructor: Paula Burleigh is a Joan Tisch Senior Teaching Fellow at the Whitney and a PhD candidate in Art History at the CUNY Graduate Center. Paula has taught adult education courses at the Museum of Modern Art, as well as undergraduate courses in Art History and the History of Photography at CUNY Baruch College, Hunter College, and Bard High School Early College.
