Esta sesión usará la colección permanente del Museo Whitney como un punto de partida para examinar las formas en que los artistas latinx han sido fundamentales en el desarrollo de la escena artística de Nueva York. A su vez, exploraremos cómo la ciudad, sus comunidades y su cultura local han servido de inspiración para estos artistas. La charla reunirá un grupo intergeneracional de artistas de la década de 1960 hasta la actualidad—entre ellos Juan Sánchez, Lady Pink y Aliza Nisenbaum—para reflexionar sobre las formas en que estos artistas radicados en Nueva York han desempeñado un papel central en la representación y la definición de su ciudad, a veces hasta interviniendo sobre ella.

Sofía Silva es becaria de arte Latinx en los departamentos de Curaduría y Educación del Whitney. Se especializa en arte contemporáneo latinoamericano y latinx y tiene una maestría en Historia del Arte del Courtauld Institute of Art en Londres.

Using the Whitney Museum’s permanent collection as a point of departure, this session will consider the ways in which Latinx artists have been critical to the development of New York’s artistic landscape, and the ways in which the city, its communities, and its local culture have served as a direct inspiration for these artists. Bringing together an intergenerational group of artists from the 1960s to the present—including Juan Sánchez, Lady Pink, and Aliza Nisenbaum—we will explore the ways in which New York based Latinx artists have held a central role in representing, framing, and, at times, intervening in the city they call home.

Sofía Silva is the Whitney's curatorial and education fellow in U.S. Latinx art. She specializes in contemporary Latin American and Latinx art and holds an MA in art history from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London.
