The Kitchen, 512 West 19th Street New York, NY 10011
Undercurrents: Experimental Ecosystems in Recent Art, the Whitney Independent Study Program’s 2010 exhibition, addresses issues of responsibility within the idea of ethical cohabitation-how to live together and how to be in the shared environment. HIKERS ORIENTATION: A Series of Indeterminate Hikes in “Google National Park” and “Manhattan Island National Search Engine” is one in a series of events organized as a part of the exhibition.
Organized by digital artists EcoArtTech, this performative demonstration will prepare hikers for urban excursions that weave through territories of nature, networks, and city using a series of interactive google maps for mobile and portable devices that encourage participants to hike urban trails that move across ecologies of the social, psychic, digital, and environmental.
Please note that Undercurrents does not take place at the Museum. The Kitchen is the primary site of the exhibition; additional sites include the High Line, the Little Red Lighthouse and the North River Waste Treatment Plant. Please consult individual calendar listings for details. All events are free and open to the public.
