Undercurrents: Experimental Ecosystems in Recent Art, the Whitney Independent Study Program’s 2010 exhibition, addresses issues of responsibly within the idea of ethical cohabitation-how to live together and how to be in the shared environment. Fragments is one in a series of performances organized as a part of the exhibition.
At the opening of Undercurrents, there will be a large empty grid drawn onto one of the gallery walls of The Kitchen. On the 5th of June, a performance will take place on the High Line in which ten artists will reproduce fragments of a photograph. After each fragment is completed, the artists will add their fragment to the empty grid in The Kitchen gallery. Once pieced together, the fragments will bring the absent image into the realm of the visible.
Please note that Undercurrents does not take place at the Museum. The Kitchen is the primary site of the exhibition; additional sites include the High Line, the Little Red Lighthouse and the North River Waste Treatment Plant. Please consult individual calendar listings for details. All events are free and open to the public.
