Emma Amos’s paintings often depicted everyday life with bright, bold colors. Her paintings ask us to consider the relationship between color, abstraction, and politics. In the 1960s, Amos was part of a group of Black artists called Spiral, which was thinking about the relationship between art and the civil rights movement. She said, “Every time I think about color it’s a political statement.” With her painting Baby, she might be asking “Is the body coloring the environment or does the environment color the body?”
