Marisol (b. 1930) is best known for her large figural sculptures from the 1960s, which address women’s social roles, new family dynamics, and contemporary and historical political figures. Throughout her career, Marisol experimented with variety of materials and drew inspiration from diverse cultural sources. Her work is often politically charged and frequently explores Marisol’s own identity as a female artist who was born in Paris of Venezuelan parents and lived most of her life in New York City. This exhibition represents the artist’s first solo show in a New York museum, features 30 works by the artist, and is the first retrospective to include Marisol’s works on paper in conjunction with her sculptures. It also aims to re-establish Marisol’s central and unique role within postwar American art, charting her dynamic relationship with Pop art, Minimalism, and feminism, among other cultural and political movements and events.
