Artist Nina Chanel Abney joins curator and scholar Lowery Stokes Sims in the Stuart Davis: In Full Swing galleries to discuss Davis's work and its importance to artists today. Abney paints vibrant figurative works that boldly explore popular culture and issues of gender and race. She has been credited with injecting new force into contemporary narrative painting. Her work was featured in the exhibition Flatlands at the Whitney and her work will be the subject of a solo exhibition, Dealer’s Choice, at the Nasher Museum next year.
Previously Chief Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design, Sims has helped to diversify and enrich understandings of American modern and contemporary art through her scholarship and support of minority American artists. Prior to joining MAD, she served as Executive Director and then President of the Studio Museum in Harlem. As a Curator at The Metroplitan Museum of Art, Sims curated the exhibition Stuart Davis, American Painter in 1991. It was Sims who first sparked Abney’s interest in Davis's practice.
