Contemporaries and Contemporaries Patron members

Contemporaries members are invited to experience a guided tour of The Lost World: The Art of Minnie Evans with Caroline Webb, Curatorial Assistant and an organizer of the exhibition.

The Lost World: The Art of Minnie Evans offers a reexamination of one of the most extraordinary self-taught artists of the twentieth century. Inspired by vivid dreams and visions, Minnie Evans (1892–1987) created hundreds of radiant pencil and crayon drawings, oil paintings, and collages that combined imagery from her Afro-Caribbean heritage, mythology, religion, popular culture, decorative arts, and the natural environment of her native Wilmington, North Carolina. At once deeply personal and expansive, Evans’s work offers a powerful meditation on faith, imagination, transcendence, and the possibility of harmony amid a vulnerable world.
