The performance program for Open Plan: Cecil Taylor continues with music and poetry by Chris Funkhouser, Tracie Morris and Susie Ibarra, Fred Moten, and Jemeel Moondoc/Ensemble Muntu (featuring Jemeel Moondoc, Larry Rolands, Mark Hennen, and Charles Downs).
About the program
Poet and technologist Chris Funkhouser presents a new sound collage that draws on Taylor's own recorded voice.
Tracie Morris, an interdisciplinary poet, performer, and vocalist, has performed on several bills with Taylor both individually and with her eponymous band. She will be accompanied by innovative percussionist Susie Ibarra, who combines jazz, world, and indigenous Philippine music into her performances and compositions.
Poet Fred Moten will perform a solo reading on the occasion of Cecil Taylor's retrospective and festival. Moten has written frequently on Taylor and his relationship to dance, improvisation, and blackness, notably in In the Break: The Aesthetics of the Black Radical Tradition (2003).
Avant-jazz alto saxophonist Jemeel Moondoc first performed as part of Taylor’s Black Music Ensemble at Antioch College in the early 1970s. He later founded the tight-knit Ensemble Muntu (featuring William Parker, Mark Hennen, Charles Downs) (1973–82), which began as a 12-piece band composed mostly of Taylor’s ex-students that was part of New York City's loft jazz scene. The Ensemble reunites for one night only with a lineup of original members. Please note: William Parker is unable to join for this performance by the Ensemble and Larry Rolands will take his place.
Free with Museum admission. Seating is available on a first-come, first-served basis. A limited number of guaranteed seats are available for advance purchase; tickets include admission to the galleries.
