Floors Five and Eight

Whitney teaching fellows will lead tours highlighting the thematic connections between the exhibitions Calder: Hypermobility and Hélio Oiticica: To Organize Delirium. Installed in the skylight eighth floor gallery and adjacent cafe, Calder: Hypermobility assembles a focused constellation of sculptures that demonstrate the inherently kinetic nature of Alexander Calder’s art. The idiosyncratic movements of these works as well as the varied perceptual responses that they provoke provide a new perspective on Calder’s interest in choreography and performance. Hélio Oiticica: To Organize Delirium is the first full-scale retrospective presented in the United States devoted to the innovative Brazilian artist. Filling the Whitney’s expansive fifth floor gallery, the exhibition charts the evolution of Oiticica’s art from his early experimental abstractions in two and three dimensions to immersive environments and interactive sculptures which aim to transform the viewer into an active participant. A wine reception will be available after the tour.
