Two Workaround Works Around Calder

In this one-night event, artist, improviser, and composer C. Spencer Yeh presents two visual and auditory works made in response to sculptures by Alexander Calder. In 2015 Yeh created a video that documents the life of Calder’s Circus in a gallery at Whitney, which became a visual score for live accompaniment by Yeh on the violin. On the occasion of the exhibition Calder: Hypermobility, Yeh represents this work, and a sequel video that roves through the exhibition, capturing the breadth of movement of Calder’s works and of their visitors. This new score, to be performed with electronics and objects, takes particular consideration of the exhibition’s porosity with the adjacent café and cityscape, made visible from a 16x9 window cut through one of the gallery walls.
Doors open a half an hour in advance of performance start time. Tickets are required ($25 adults; $18 students and seniors; free for members). Museum admission included in ticket purchase. Capacity is limited. Visitors are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance. Online ticket sales close two hours before the performance begins. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the admissions desk on a first-come, first-served basis.
About the artist
C. Spencer Yeh is recognized for his interdisciplinary activities and collaborations as an artist, improviser, and composer, as well his music project Burning Star Core. Recent presentations of work include "Modern Mondays" at MoMA NYC, "Sound Horizon" at the Walker Art Center Minneapolis MN, "Closer to the Edge" in Singapore and "Crossing Over" in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia, "Martha Friedman: Some Hags" at the NYU IFA Great Hall NYC, "Ed Atkins: Performance Capture" at the Kitchen NYC, the Berwick Film and Media Arts Festival, "Tony Conrad Tribute" at Atelier Nord/Ultima Festival in Oslo Norway, "Great Tricks From Your Future" at D-CAF in Cairo Egypt, Borderline Festival in Athens Greece, Kinomuzeum at Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw Poland, the Lausanne Underground Film and Music Festival, and LAMPO at the Renaissance Society in Chicago IL. Yeh also collaborated with Triple Canopy for their contribution to the Whitney Biennial in 2014. He was a 2015 Artist-in-Residence at ISSUE Project Room NYC, and was included in the performance program for Greater New York at MoMA/PS1. A new vinyl record, "The RCA Mark II," will be published by Primary Information in 2017.
