Behind the Scenes Tour of Human Interest: Portraits from the Whitney’s Collection

This behind-the-scenes tour led by Jennie Goldstein, assistant curator, and Clara Rojas-Sebesta, assistant conservator, will explore two key collection priorities: the display and preservation of art. Conservators and curators work together to find creative solutions that allow the Museum to showcase art in the present while also protecting the collection for the future. In the case of contemporary artworks, this generative dialogue can be especially nuanced: artists will often participate in discussions about how to best display and preserve their works.

The tour will explore three works on view in Human Interest: Portraits from the Whitney’s Collection: Njideka Akunyili Crosby’s Portals (2016), Urs Fischer’s Standing Julian (2015), and Jack Pierson’s Self-Portrait #4 (2003). Using these works as touchstones, Goldstein and Rojas-Sebesta will share their insider perspectives to illuminate the tension—and synergy—between collection display and collection stewardship. A wine reception will be available before the tour.
