ASL Tour and Interpreted Performance by My Barbarian

The Whitney is thrilled to invite you to join us for an evening of art and ASL as part of the 2014 Biennial. A free wine and cheese reception will be followed by a highlights tour with Educator Alexandria Wailes and an ASL-interpreted live performance by artist collective My Barbarian.
My Barbarian, a collective consisting of Malik Gaines, Jade Gordon, and Alexandro Segade, draw from experimental performance, traditional theater, and visual art to produce live events, music, and videos. On March 21 My Barbarian will present a live ASL-interpreted adaptation of Bertolt Brecht’s The Mother (first performed in 1932), activating the papier-mâché masks and triangular wooden stage on view in the Whitney’s Lobby Gallery. Brecht’s didactic play traces the political radicalization of a factory-worker’s mother, Pelegea Vlassova, in pre-revolutionary Russia. My Barbarian’s interpretation includes musical numbers, improvised content, and also maintains the Brechtian concept of the Lehrstück, or learning-play, by inviting audience members to participate in select scenes. The performance will last approximately 45 minutes.

7:30pm: ASL-interpreted theatrical performance by My Barbarian
Admission to tour and reception is free with advance registration. Space for performance is limited.
