Floor 6, Outdoor Gallery

Open to all ages

Artists of all ages are invited to spend time with a reproduction of Super Sunset Billboard in the gallery and create their own landscape inspired by what they see. Gaze at Lichtenstein’s sunset or look out the window at the landscape around you, then experiment with shape, line, and pattern to create a view of your own.

Lichtenstein created this giant abstract sunset as a billboard installed by the side of the road near Philadelphia. Billboards are usually designed to sell us something or tell us what to buy. Imagine driving by and seeing a giant image of a sunset instead. Consider what it means to use a space usually meant for commercial advertisements for art.

Roy Lichtenstein was born and raised in New York City in 1924. He became known for his distinctive style using black outlines, bold colors, and dots resembling those used in comics. Over the years, he brought his unmistakable approach to everything from advertisements to art historical masterpieces.
