Floor 5

Open to all ages

Artists of all ages are invited to make their own river sketches. Join Whitney Educators in Mary Heilmann’s Long Line. Take a seat in one of the vibrant sculptural chairs created by Heilmann and gaze out at the Hudson River as you draw.

Mary Heilmann once said that “museums are places to hang out,” and this installation embodies that spirit. Long Line includes a hand-painted enlargement of her 2020 painting, influenced by watching waves off the coasts of Long Island and California, creating a visual rhyme with the Hudson River. The exhibition also features sculptural chairs, inviting relaxation, social connection, and engagement with the Museum’s architecture and surrounding cityscape.
