The Whitney is located in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan, right in the heart of New York City. This vibrant, ever-changing city inspires many of the artworks you’ll find in the galleries.
One great example is Brooklyn Bridge: Variation on an Old Theme by Joseph Stella. When Stella arrived in New York from a small village in Italy in 1896, he was captivated by the city’s energy, industry, and endless possibilities. He became especially fascinated by the Brooklyn Bridge, with its sweeping cables, glowing lights, constant movement, and dramatic views. Stella returned to the bridge again and again in his art. In this painting, he captures its towering structure and offers multiple perspectives of the city it connects.
What about this bustling city inspires you?
