Artists of all ages are invited to make their own layered collages inspired by the work of Isamu Noguchi on view in “Untitled” (America), Participants are encouraged to experiment with arranging, layering, and balancing forms to explore how shapes relate to one another in a two-dimensional composition.
Artist Isamu Noguchi worked across many materials, from paper and clay to stone, metal, and even light. His wide-ranging practice included drawing, sculpture, furniture, playgrounds, and more.
The sculptures on view show how Noguchi experimented with different forms and materials from the 1930s through the 1950s. “Everything I do has an element of engineering in it,” Noguchi once said, explaining that he disliked gluing pieces together or forcing materials to behave unnaturally. Noguchi honored the unique qualities of each material he used. In the works on view, abstract forms interact through careful balance and interlocking structures shaped by the materials themselves.
