Alex Da Corte is a Venezuelan-American artist inspired by Pop Art and Surrealism and informed by American cultural references. He is the co-curator of Roy Lichtenstein: Like New, which presents a retrospective of Lichtenstein in the contemporary context of accelerated production and circulation of images. For this Walter Annenberg Lecture, Alex Da Corte presents a talk about his engagement with Lichtenstein, combining his experiences as an artist and curator.
A conversation between the artist and Scott Rothkopf, Alice Pratt Brown Director, follows the presentation.
Alex Da Corte (b. 1980) was born in Camden, New Jersey, and lives and works in Philadelphia. His work was included in the 2019 Venice Biennale and the 2018 Carnegie International in Pittsburgh, and he was selected as the 2021 Roof Garden Commission at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Past one-person exhibitions include the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the Secession in Vienna, the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa, Japan, Fondazione Prada in Milan, and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, Denmark.
In honor of the late Walter H. Annenberg—philanthropist, patron of the arts, and former ambassador—the Whitney Museum of American Art established the Walter Annenberg Annual Lecture to advance this country’s understanding of its art and culture.
