Leaders
2020-2021

YI Leaders, 11th and 12th graders who participated in a paid internship in the Whitney’s Education Department, hosted several Whitney Teens x Artists, a virtual discussion with an artist whose work is currently on view at the Whitney.   YI Leaders worked with collection artists Kahlil Robert Irving, Julie Mehretu, and Dawoud Bey.


Jamai

Jamai is from Brooklyn, NY. For Jamai, art is any way to express herself and her emotions as well as create something out of them. In the future, Jamai hopes to develop her art style and grow as an artist.


Ashley

Ashley is from Nicaragua. Ashley cannot imagine what art actually is because it could be anything. However, art means so much since she can use it to express her feelings instead of having to struggle to put it into words. In the future, Ashley hopes to grow as a person, become more passionate, and find the true meaning of life.


Cara

Cara is from Queens, NY. For Cara, art is a form of expression that allows both the artist and the audience to heal, engage in conversation, and develop meaningful experiences. In the future, Cara hopes to continue to immerse herself in a creative environment and make a positive impact through art.


Isabel

Isabel is born and raised in NYC and lives in the Bronx. For Isabel, art means expression at its very best. Art is a visual representation of the artists mind, which Isabel believes is an incredible way to provoke feeling. As an artist, Isabel is able to release their creativeness and emotions. Art is something essential to their life. In the future, Isabel hopes to be become wealthy. Emotionally and mentally wealthy. Isabel wants to learn from experiences and always take them with them forever to be at a place where they are doing what they love, which includes art, and continue to always have dreams and goals.


Rhiannon

Rhiannon is from Queens, NY. For Rhiannon, art is like a form of communication and an amazing outlet. It allows the artist to express their thoughts, feelings, and observations and it means whatever the artist wants it to mean. The artist has full control over what they are creating and how they want to create. In the future, Rhiannon hopes to create a space teens enjoy, feel comfortable being themselves in, and make them want to come back. She also hopes to improve her public speaking skills and get to plan amazing events at The Whitney.


Hailey

Hailey is from Brooklyn, NY. For Hailey, art is a unique form of expression that manifests itself to whatever form you want and create it to be. In the future, Hailey hopes to accomplish some kind of understanding or peace with important things even if that means she doesn’t get to achieve every single goal she has set for herself.


Toby

Toby is from Manhattan. For Toby, art is a universal language that can be used to connect people when words fail. In the future, Toby hopes to work in STEM but wants to continue in his creative endeavors.


Kaia

Kaia is from New York City. For Kaia, art is a way of connecting to the world around her, as well as history. Kaia have found that art has served as a gateway to understanding cultural movements, historical events, cultural phenomena, etc., to the greatest extent. She has found that art is the most reflective and insightful resource out there to better grasping the reason things have occurred. In the future, Kaia hopes to continue her engagement in art as well as explore the correlation between art history and political science. I hope to work in a field that combines creativity and critical thinking.
