Artists
With Ja’Tovia Gary
On Wednesdays, YI Artists worked with filmmaker Ja’Tovia Gary to make experimental films with found 16mm footage. These films were screened at the YI Final Celebration in May 2018. Gary’s film An Ecstatic Experience (2017) was on view in the exhibition An Incomplete History of Protest: Selections from the Whitney’s Collection, 1940–2017.
Adrienne
Adrienne is originally from China. She defines art as the string of a guitar. Adrienne doesn’t know what the future holds, but she does know that she always wants to be herself.
Alan
Alan was born in China. To Alan, art is self-expression. He believes that art can make you a better person. In the future, Alan aspires to be an architect.
Chris
Chris lives in Brooklyn but he is originally from Colombia. For him, art is a vehicle for human expression, political change, and mass influence. In the future, he hopes to become as skilled at piano as American jazz pianist and composer, Bill Evans.
Emanuel
Emanuel lives in Flushing, Queens. He believes that art is the ultimate form of self-expression. In the future, he aims to be happy wherever he is.
Faizah
Faizah lives in Queens. To Faizah, art is self-expression with no restrictions. In the future, she hopes to inspire future generations to stand up for the things they believe in.
Ferdinand
Ferdinand is from Mexico. To Ferdinand, the core of art is creative expression. In the future, he wants to get a PhD, and become a plastic surgeon. He also wants to become a classical musician and songwriter.
Genesis
Genesis lives in Glendale, Queens. To Genesis, art is embodied meaning. She believes that art is the physical manifestation of the artists’ creative mind. In the future, she hopes to pursue a creative career and continue making art. She wants to study art and art history, and possibly museum studies in hopes of becoming a curator.
Jeonte
Jeonte is from Harlem. Through art, Jeonte expresses her inner self. In the future, she hopes to see her art in a gallery.
Kaleema
Kaleema lives in Brooklyn. For Kaleema, art is self-expression and a way of communication. She hopes to influence future generations.
Kyana
Kyana lives in Queens. Her nationality is Jamaican and American. Kyana believes that art means to be different, to be unique. Through this program, Kyana hopes to gain more art experience. In the future, she wants to go to college and become a vet.
Maria
Maria lives in the Bronx. For Maria, art is the way she expresses herself: the music she listens to, the way she dresses, the way she observes the world. In the future, she wants to tell stories through her art and hopes to inspire people.
Maxine
Maxine lives in Brooklyn. She defines art as something you can build on. In the future, Maxine wants to have a career in design.
Nowshin
Nowshin lives in the Bronx. To her, art means peace. In the future, Nowshin hopes to expand her art.
Olivia
Olivia lives in Brooklyn. For her, art is meant to be an expression of political and idealistic forms. Olivia believes that art is only defined by the context in which it is considered. In the future, she wants to be an aerospace engineer or astrophysicist and send something to space.
Rebekah
Rebekah is originally from China. Through art, Rebekah expresses her feelings. In the future, she hopes to become a fashion designer.
Sam
Sam lives in Washington Heights. For Sam, art is a form of expression. In the future, he wants to work with hip-hop artists.
Theo
Theo is from New York. To Theo, art is a way to let things out of his head. In the future, he aspires to be an artist.
Valeria
Valeria lives in the Bronx but she is originally from the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. She believes that art is the ultimate form of self- expression. For Valeria, art means to be different. In the future, she hopes to gain better art experience and meet new people.
Zach
Zach lives in Brooklyn. He defines art as a concept that is whatever the artist desires it to be. It can be interpreted in an infinite number of ways. In the future, he wants to get a PhD.
