Open Studio for Teens is a weekly art-making program that takes place in the Laurie M. Tisch Education Center. Teens from all walks of life attend this free program to work on whatever type of art project they want. Young adults who have little to no access to art materials benefit from this program—it offers teens a safe space to create with little adult interference. The Whitney’s Youth Insights Leaders and educators also use this time to distribute information about upcoming teen events. As a YI Leader, I had the opportunity to greet teens at the Museum entrance and give them tickets. A few people from my school even showed up.  I’m glad to know that my flyers are working!

During Open Studio, teens were given pencils, colored pencils, and paper. Some brought their own sketch books. The jazz music playing in the background made it a relaxing environment.

Our goal is to encourage more teens to visit and have a sense of belonging at the Whitney. We want people to know that the museum experience is for young adults as well as everyone else.
