Every year, the Meatpacking District Improvement Association hosts Harvest Fest, an outdoor festival featuring popular establishments from the area. For the last two years the Whitney Museum has offered an art project for families at the festival. Prior to helping out at this year’s Harvest Fest, I didn’t know what to expect. I just knew that there would be an abundance of pumpkins and hay, and crowds of children, dressed in their most adorable costumes. Upon arrival, I found that my predictions were correct. Kids and their parents were dressed in their best Halloween attire. I saw cowboys, ninja turtles, and a myriad of other mythical beings.

Kids and families made wire sculptures, inspired by the work of Alexander calder, an artist in the Whitney’s permanent collection. Throughout the day, Whitney staff and YI Leaders socialized with the kids and adults while helping them with their projects. During the activity, we built Halloween inspired figures like spiders, aliens, and someone was even ambitious enough to construct a witch on a broomstick. Overall the Harvest Fest art project was a success.
