On July 15, Youth Insights teens met with members of the Digital Media, Graphic Design, and Marketing team. First, we met Elyse Mallouk, Digital Content Manager. Mallouk is in charge of the layout and navigation of the Whitney’s website. She spoke about how the Internet is one way for the Whitney to reach a larger audience.

Next, we met Hilary Greenbaum, Director of Graphic Design. She told us about the history of the Whitney and how the Museum’s iconic logo evolved over time. Greenbaum showed us an image of the facade of the first Whitney Museum where the logo was an eagle. She explained the artistic decisions made when designing signage, posters, and invitations.

Finally, we met Sarah Meller, the Whitney’s Marketing Associate. Meller is in charge of attracting visitors to the Museum through Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. She asked us to come up with a creative way to advertise Youth Insights Arts Careers program. As someone who is extremely interested in the field of communication and marketing, I particularly enjoyed this activity. My group designed a marketing plan that put the Whitney’s logo on subway seats. At the end of the day I learned that while all three departments work closely together, they all have very distinct roles.
