Independent Study Program

The Independent Study Program at the Whitney provides a setting where students pursuing art practice, curatorial work, art historical scholarship, and critical writing engage in ongoing discussions and debates that examine the historical, social, and intellectual conditions of artistic production. Each academic year twenty-five students are selected to participate.

The Whitney Library is a comprehensive research collection in the field of twentieth-century and contemporary American art. And the Study Center is devoted to the storage, research, and display of the Whitney's collection of works on paper, which includes over 19,000 prints, drawings, and photographs.

After seeing an exhibition at the Whitney, explore it further by joining one of the Whitney's Teaching Fellows for an open discussion about the politics and ethics of representation.
