Birthday Self-Portrait

Florine Stettheimer picked the flowers in the center of this painting for her sixtieth birthday. This painting could be a kind of self-portrait. The artist painted her first name on the bow around the flowers. Can you find a tiny figure lounging by the river? Maybe that’s the artist! What else catches your eye? The frame of this painting was made to look like white lace, similar to the furnishings Stettheimer designed for her family’s New York apartment.

Make your own birthday painting or drawing. Imagine your ideal day. Where would you be? What would you do? Who else would be there? What would you wear? How would you celebrate? Include yourself and everything you would need for your fabulous birthday celebration. Add an interesting frame around your drawing or painting.
