Mia Locks: The limits of what a performer can do, and how often a performer can be out on that terrace, both because of weather but also because of endurance, was a conversation that we talked a lot about what was possible, but also what would make sense for this work.

And part of the reason that I think Pups, as we like to call them, decided to have a mannequin instead of just having a kind of blank space was to have a certain sense of ongoingness, of that place or that position, even if it’s only activated sporadically. But there is this notion of liberty, or this notion of Lady Liberty, or of all of the kind of associations we have with the Statue of Liberty, that it doesn’t go away and come back, but that it’s actually an ongoing part of the landscape of the show.
