Visitor Policies

Book Tickets Online or at the Museum
Members may use their membership cards for anytime admission. Corporate partners and other Museum affiliates may book complimentary tickets. The Whitney accepts card payments online. Both card and cash payments are accepted at the Museum.

What you need to know

Health and Safety
COVID-19 vaccination and face coverings are not required, but strongly recommended. An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public space where people are present. We cannot guarantee that you will not be exposed to COVID-19 during your visit, and all those entering the Whitney do so at their own risk as to such exposure. Please do not visit the Museum if you have a fever or any COVID-19 symptoms or have tested positive for COVID-19.

Visitor Conduct
Whitney staff and visitors have the right to an environment free from abusive, threatening, or inappropriate behavior. The Museum reserves the right to remove any person acting in an unacceptable or inappropriate manner.

General Policies

Please do not touch the works of art on display. Even clean hands can damage surfaces.

Food and drink are prohibited in the galleries.

Smoking and e-cigarettes are not permitted anywhere within the building.

Sketching with pencil is welcome. Use of charcoal, pastels, permanent markers, and watercolor or oil paint is prohibited.

Unless otherwise noted, photography in the galleries is allowed for personal, non-commercial purposes only. The use of flash, tripods, and selfie sticks is prohibited.

Bicycles and scooters are not permitted inside the Museum.

Backpacks smaller than 11 × 15 × 5 inches may be checked, or removed and carried while in the galleries. Larger backpacks must be checked. Large umbrellas must be checked. Smaller umbrellas may be placed in a protective bag supplied by the Museum and carried. 

Items that may not be accepted in the coat check include food and drink, bicycles, folding bicycles, sporting equipment, artwork, musical instruments, strollers, and luggage of any size.

All articles must be claimed before the museum closes. The Museum is not responsible for items that are left overnight. A corresponding coat check tag is required for the return of items. Please place the numbered tag in a secure place.

The Museum’s total liability for items left in the coat checkroom is half the purchase price of the item up to $250.

Service animals are welcome. Pets are not permitted in the Museum.

Weapons inside the Museum pose a potential threat to the safety and security of our visitors and employees, and firearms of any type are strictly prohibited at all times inside the Museum.

General admission tickets are valid for one entry to the Museum for the specified date and time reserved. For refunds and exchanges, please contact info@whitney.org.

Please note that visitors to the Museum may be photographed, videotaped, or otherwise recorded. By attending, you grant the Museum permission to use photographs and/or audiovisual recordings in which you appear for archival, documentary, publicity, advertising, or other purposes.
