GUIDELINES FOR USING WEBQUESTS In general, the Jacob Lawrence Webquests on this site can be used by students to learn about Jacob Lawrence's Migration Series and three additional paintings that relate to larger themes in Lawrences work. Each Webquest begins with a series of guiding questions for the students as they examine a particular painting. These questions can be used in class discussions or for students to take notes. Please feel free to facilitate image analysis differently, based on whatever context works best in your classroom. In all of the Webquests, there are additional tasks for the students to complete, each in the context of exploring Internet resources as they expand upon the themes of Jacob Lawrence. Each Webquest has a suggested Process that the students should follow, as concepts build upon one another. Some of the tasks are independent, while others are more collaborative. Some of the Webquests include bibliographies that can be used as supplements to Internet resources. For the elementary school Webquests, you may find these particularly useful, or you may want to print out some of the Internet resources and read them aloud in class with the students. Again, you are free to modify what works best in your classroom environment. In the Evaluation section of each of the Webquests, it is explained how each student will be evaluated. In this section, there are learning and performance standards that each Webquest addresses. The Standards are based on New York State Standards, but can be adapted to any state's standards. In addition, we've provided you with a selection of links to useful standards-related resources. Also, you are encouraged to develop rubrics for evaluating student-produced work. We've also provided links to different rubric templates that you may find useful and easily adaptable. You might also consider creating rubrics along with your students. Since each of the Webquests is based on a theme of one of Jacob Lawrence's paintings, please note that there is not a Webquest for every grade level. If you can't find a Webquest for a particular grade or age group of a theme that you're interested in, click on an image and you will find links to an "Explore" section. There is additional text and other curriculum suggestions for non-web related projects that you can do in your classroom. Finally, we have provided links to additional on-line lesson plans and suggested resources for some of the Webquests. For instance, New York Times Learning, has a comprehensive archive of daily lesson plans that relate to many themes and/or tasks the students will explore. Depending upon the length of an activity or unit, you may find these lessons complement some of the Webquests.
