Open Studio: Jason Polan
Jun 3, 2016

Families joined artist and illustrator Jason Polan on May 7 for a large-scale portrait drawing workshop inspired by the exhibition Human Interest: Portraits from the Whitney’s Collection. As creator of the project, Every Person In New York, Polan draws people in subway stations, museums, restaurants, and on street corners, representing the characters he sees with expressive black lines. His illustrations have appeared in publications such as The New York Times and The New Yorker among other publications.

Parents and kids created life-size portraits. First they were asked to lie down on a sheet of paper and think about how they would pose. Then someone in their family helped them draw an outline of their body. Once they had an outline, families added details to their figures.

When kids and parents finished drawing, they cut out their portrait and added it to the growing crowd of people that lined the theater walls.
