Daniel Johnston has been writing and recording music for more than twenty-five years, earning considerable acclaim within the American music underground, and beyond, for his stripped-down yet highly ebullient lyricism. In the early 1980s, he began distributing his homemade cassettes, recorded in his parents' basement, to passersby on the streets of Austin, Texas. A prolific songwriter, his lyrics focus on a range of familiar American themes, including the joys and pains of love, the exploits of comic book characters such as Jack Kirby's Captain America, and the allure of rock and roll.
