Interested in exploring the compositional possibilities of elements frequently used (and naturalized) in more traditional forms of painting, Ryman experimented here with the date and his signature, turning them on their side and enlarging them into prominent graphic motifs that redouble the vertical rectangular thrust of the black shape at left. Ryman has always preferred a square or nearly square format, explaining that it provides the “most perfect space,” and downplays the need for “spatial composition.”\u003c/p\u003e","ai_alt_text":"Abstract painting with a large black vertical block, white upper area, and tan lower section.","alt_text":null,"visual_description":null,"on_view":false,"created_at":"2017-08-30T16:01:02.000-04:00","updated_at":"2026-02-06T11:59:57.661-05:00","images":[{"id":104644,"url":"https://whitneymedia.org/assets/artwork/17206/2002_262_cropped.jpg"}]},"relationships":{"artists":{"data":[{"id":"1143","type":"artist"}]}}}}
