The son of a Thai diplomat, Tiravanija studied in Canada and the United States, including at the \u003ca href=\"/isp\"\u003eWhitney Independent Study Program\u003c/a\u003e, and has taken the social aspect of art to its logical extreme. His works have involved various actions set in exhibition spaces, such as cooking and serving Thai curry, re-creating a replica of his apartment and leaving it open day and night to visitors, building a pirate broadcasting station, and setting up a professional recording studio for anyone to use.\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003ca href=\"/collection/works/39981\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eUntitled 2008–2011 (the map of the\nland of feeling) I–III\u003c/em\u003e\u003c/a\u003e\u003cem\u003e\u0026nbsp;\u003c/em\u003eis an ambitious project\nthat makes use of a range of printing\ntechniques. Across its three sheets, which\ntogether extend some eighty-four feet\nin length, Tiravanija draws on his personal\nhistory, presenting successive images of\nhis passports across the years that\ndocument two decades of his international\ntravels, as well as city plans and maps\nfrom places he visited. The work charts both\ntime and space, including illustrations\nof archaeological labyrinths, symbols of\nmovement, and renderings of ships to\nrepresent Christopher Columbus and Zheng\nHe, a Chinese admiral who sailed around\nthe world before European explorers.\nAdditional depictions of a urinal and a pot of\nmussels respectively reference \u003ca href=\"/artists/1715\"\u003eMarcel\nDuchamp\u003c/a\u003e and Marcel Broodthaers, two\nsignificant artistic inspirations for Tiravanija.\u003c/p\u003e","on_view":false,"artport":false,"biennial":true,"collection":true,"ulan_id":"500114916","wikidata_id":"Q989861","created_at":"2017-08-30T15:40:22.000-04:00","updated_at":"2026-04-23T01:33:17.737-04:00","links":{"artworks":"/api/artists/9382/artworks","exhibitions":"/api/artists/9382/exhibitions"}}}}
