His canvases, often marked\nby their earthy palettes, lively social\ninteractions, and brick backdrops, reflected\nhis urban environment and gave visibility\nto groups underrepresented in both the\nsociety and art of the time, including\nrecent immigrants and the gay community\n(Wong was openly gay). The physical\narchitecture of the neighborhood constantly\nlooms behind this very human subject\nmatter: especially tenement buildings similar\nto the one Wong himself lived in, whose\nwindows sometimes reveal interior lives and\nwhose walls often bear traces of graffiti.\n\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eOne of Wong’s most iconic works,\n\u003ca href=\"/collection/works/12272\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eBig Heat\u003c/em\u003e\u003c/a\u003e presents a profound meditation on\nboth the ravages and poignancies of life.\nIn the foreground two firemen—an ongoing\nfascination of the artist’s—share a tender\nkiss as the specter of a massive, partially\ncharred tenement building looms in\nthe background. The building is embellished\nwith bright patches of paint used to buff\nover graffiti, an urban, vernacular art form\nthat Wong supported and collected in\nearnest.
