The chair’s function\nas a place to sit has been nullified, as it is\noccupied by a plastic tub and large stretch\nof velvet. The work’s placement on a\nwheeled trolley, and its inclusion of a light\nfixture, impart an aspect of unpredictability\nand movement. As with many of her\nworks, the piece is anchored to the wall,\nfixing it in space, in this case by a bright pink\nelectrical cord. All of the components—\nthe chair itself and the grid of yarn skeins on\nthe wall behind—are surfaces upon which\nStockholder applies paint. As she explained:\n“Color drives me. I make art to play with\ncolor, to see it work. . . . I experience color\nas sculptural, as something that collects\nonto things and takes up space, a physical\nevent existing next to physical objects.”\n\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eStockholder’s sculptures,\nassemblages, site-specific installations,\npaintings, and prints make use of ordinary,\noften nonart materials in extraordinary\nways. Each component, from laundry baskets\nto bowling balls, extension cords, and\nrefrigerators, brings its own associations\nand histories, while simultaneously\nengendering fresh resonances when\ncombined with the other items.
