Thus in the guise of\na docent in early videotaped performances\nsuch as \u003cem\u003eMuseum Highlights\u003c/em\u003e (1989) and\n\u003ca href=\"/collection/works/47243\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eWelcome to the Wadsworth\u003c/em\u003e\u003c/a\u003e (1991), she\ndraws on archival sources to script museum\ntours in which she cleverly broaches the\nrelationship between taste and class,\ncultural philanthropy and welfare policy, or\ncultural institutions and urban segregation.\n\u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eFraser frequently focuses her work\non the relationship between artists and their\npatrons. For \u003ca href=\"/collection/works/45058\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eUntitled\u003c/em\u003e\u003c/a\u003e she proposed\na project in which she would videotape a\nsexual encounter between herself and\na collector, who would commission the work,\nan arrangement that was facilitated by\nher gallery. Shot in a hotel room from a high\ncamera angle, the silent, unedited video\nis but one component of Fraser’s project,\nwhich also involves the process of negotiation\nand reception of the work, including\ndetailed agreements setting parameters for\nhow it may be displayed and circulated.\nIn \u003cem\u003eUntitled \u003c/em\u003eboth Fraser and her patron are\non display, and the intimate details of their\ntransaction are laid bare for our examination.\nAs Fraser has explained, \u003cem\u003eUntitled\u003c/em\u003e “was\nabout taking the economic exchange of\nbuying and selling art and turning it into a\nvery personal exchange.” Number one\nin an edition of five, this DVD was acquired\nfrom the participating collector as\na partial gift and partial purchase, an\narrangement negotiated by the artist, and\nanother step in the sequence of\nexchanges that constitute the work.\u003c/p\u003e","on_view":true,"artport":false,"biennial":true,"collection":true,"ulan_id":"500125322","wikidata_id":"Q273205","created_at":"2017-08-30T17:13:54.000-04:00","updated_at":"2026-04-13T07:00:26.501-04:00","links":{"artworks":"/api/artists/12755/artworks","exhibitions":"/api/artists/12755/exhibitions"}}}}
