His \u003ca href=\"/collection/works/27387\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eA Journey That Wasn’t\u003c/em\u003e\u003c/a\u003e,\nwhich premiered at the \u003ca href=\"/exhibitions/2006-biennial\"\u003e2006 Whitney\nBiennial\u003c/a\u003e, is part documentary film\nand part reenactment. Slipping nimbly\nbetween fact and fiction, it represents the\nartist’s journey to Antarctica and his\nsearch for a species of albino penguin\nrumored to exist on a glacial island.\nWhile in the antarctic Huyghe encountered\nislands of ice that had detached from\nthe main continent due to global warming\nand he translated this shifting topography\ninto pulsing signals of light based on\nMorse code. These signals were later\nused by the composer Joshua Cody as the\nbasis for an original orchestral piece\nperformed at an ice skating rink in New\nYork’s Central Park.
