What you’ll need

Paper, colored pencils, or paint and brushes

  1. The church of Gelmeroda was one of Lyonel Feininger’s favorite places to paint. Think about your favorite place. What do you like about this place?
  2. Feininger fragmented, or broke up, the forms of the church into geometric shapes. He uses small triangles to make the people, and rectangles to make the sky. How might you represent your favorite place with geometric forms?
  3. With your pencil and paper, draw your favorite place, using geometric shapes, line, and color. If you want to paint instead, be sure to have water and something to clean up with, like paper towels, after you’re done.
