Insider Series Members in the Curate Your Own Program
During this talk, artist and educator Mark Joshua Epstein will answer the question, “What is a painting?” by breaking down the medium’s material components—support (oftentimes stretched canvas), pigment, and binding medium—and by describing some of the techniques artists use to manipulate these components. Works from the Whitney’s collection and the Laura Owens mid-career survey will serve as case studies. An optional demonstration and hands-on workshop will take place after the talk.
Mark Joshua Epstein (b. 1979) is a visual artist and independent curator based in New York. Recent solo exhibitions include Vane Gallery in Newcastle, England and Biquini Wax in Mexico City.
