Whitney Museum Second Floor (Kaufman Astoria Studios Film and Video Gallery)
Part of the 2014 Biennial, Gary Indiana’s video Stanley Park includes footage taken at the Presidio Modelo, a prison on the Isla de la Juventud in Cuba. In this work, Indiana replaces the all-seeing eye of the prison’s surveillance tower with a video of jellyfish and photographs of young Cuban men—suggesting an analogy between recent jellyfish population increases in the majority of the world’s coastal ecosystems and rising global incarceration rates, particularly of men of color, and rampant government surveillance.
